1974 - The Netherlands is the first country to ban discrimination against gays in the military. [1]

1992 - Canada lifts gay military ban. [1]

1993 - Israel enforces policy to allow gays and lesbians to serve openly and without discrimination. [1] Gays in the IDF also have additional rights to ensure their safety and comfort.

July 2003 - Russia resolves ambiguity in policy in favour of allowing those with "non-standard sexual orientation" in the military. [1]

2008 - DADT affects minorities disproportionately [2]
Dept of Defence data shows that 71% of the active force is white and 85% is male. Of the 640 service members discharged under DADT in the 2008 fiscal year, 45% were racial minorities and 34% were women. In 2007, though women made up 14% of the Army and 20% of the Air Force, discharges totaled 46% and 49% respectively. [3]

The Pentagon has spent more than $200 million taxpayer dollars to replace service men and women discharged under the ban since 1993, according to a 2005 GAO report. A 2006 Blue Ribbon Commission Report found that the total cost of implementing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” between FY 1994 and FY 2003 was at least $363.8 million. The military has discharged almost 800 “mission-critical” troops and at least 59 Arabic linguists and nine Farsi linguists under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in the last five years.

March 2010 - Lt Dan Choi and Capt James (Jim) Pietrangelo handcuff themselves to the White House fence after an HRC benefit. Both are arrested for "failure to obey a lawful order by a police officer." Also arrested are Robin McGehee and 9 others from GetEQUAL.
